The holiday favorite A Christmas Carol reminds us that during the season of giving, it’s often better to give than receive. At Sunflower Dermatology and Medical Day Spa, few emotions can be as strong as the happiness received by having the ability to provide someone with that they really want or need. One dignity item that a number of new Kansas City moms need but may not have is an ample supply of clean diapers for their child. Unfortunately diapers, a critical element for starting a new life off right for baby and mom, don’t qualify for financial assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Fulfilling a Holiday Wish
Dermatologist Brian Matthys, DO, and his wife and practice partner Molly Menser, DO, are the proud parents of a toddler. The couple understands the implications of not having such an important child rearing tool. With this in mind, the couple will proudly celebrate Sunflower Dermatology’s third annual diaper drive. Produced through assistance from the Sunflower Dermatology staff and patients, participants will collect diapers for donation to Happy Bottoms, Kansas City’s local diaper bank. Located in Lenexa, Kansas, the diaper bank supplies diapers to low-income families living throughout the metro area. In an effort to create a pleasurable experience, Happy Bottoms volunteers wrap the diapers in bunches and provide them a no cost to parents in need.
Donations Help Eliminate Stress
Because diapers are such an instrumental aspect of raising a child, not having ample access to enough clean diapers can create a health concern for the child and become an ongoing stressor for the mother. Parents who don’t have enough diapers must leave the child in a dirty diaper or have the child go without when diaper supplies run low. A child wearing a fresh diaper is more likely to sleep better and as a result avoid health issues associated with lack of sleep. This also benefits the mom by lessening a financial struggle and boosting early development. Sunflower Dermatology is proud to be part of an effort that’s distributed 3,815,185 diapers to date to families in Kansas City.
Good Early Choices Provide a Foundation
Through the provision of ample resources to caring organizations such as Happy Bottoms, families can have the opportunity to provide other developmental necessities such as nutritious food, safe housing, and ample medical care. At Sunflower Dermatology, we believe in many areas individual choices add up over time. Similarly, each day in our practice we observe how small positive choices when performed consistently can make a big difference.
For ourselves and our patients, this is evident in the daily choice to care for the skin, the largest organ in the body. Smart skin care choices include cleaning with the right skin care products, daily protection for the skin with a sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, and wearing sun protection with sunglasses and hats to protect the skin from skin cancer and premature aging and wrinkles.
